When a heat pump stops heating in the middle of a New York winter, the cause is rarely obvious from the symptom alone. Cold air from the vents can mean a failed reversing valve, low refrigerant, a defrost fault, or a control problem — each with a different repair and a different price. Fuse HVAC & Appliance Repair New York diagnoses heat pumps across Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Nassau County. Every visit starts with testing: $99 + tax, credited in full when you approve the repair. You approve one fixed price before any work begins, and every repair is backed by a 90-day labor warranty.
Three safe checks before you call: confirm the thermostat is set to Heat and set above the current room temperature; check the air filter; and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of snow, leaves, and stored items. Please do not open the unit’s electrical cabinet — that side is for a technician working with the power isolated.
Common Heat Pump Problems We Repair
Heat Pump Not Heating
Possible causes include low refrigerant charge, a reversing valve that no longer switches, a failed compressor, or the system relying on auxiliary heat that has itself failed. We test refrigerant pressures, valve operation and electrical readings before naming the failed part.
Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air
In heating mode this can be a refrigerant-side fault, a reversing valve stuck part-way, or simply a defrost cycle doing its job. We check supply-air temperature, pressures and valve switching to separate a real fault from normal defrost behavior.
Outdoor Unit Not Running
A dead outdoor unit may be a failed contactor or capacitor, a control-board fault, a tripped safety, or no call from the thermostat. We verify power, controls and safeties step by step rather than replacing the most expensive part first.
Thermostat and Control Problems
A blank screen, a wrong mode setting, a failed temperature sensor, or a lost changeover signal can leave a healthy heat pump doing nothing — or heating when it should cool. Ductless units may show an error code or blinking lights instead. We check thermostat power and settings, control wiring and board outputs, and read any stored error codes before suspecting the refrigerant circuit.
Icing Up or Stuck in Defrost
An outdoor coil that stays iced over points to the defrost board, defrost sensor, or low charge — while light frost between defrost cycles is normal. We test the defrost sequence end to end and check the charge.
Not Reaching the Set Temperature
A heat pump that runs constantly but never catches up may be undersized for the cold snap, low on refrigerant, restricted at the coil or filter, or losing capacity to a compressor fault. We measure actual output and airflow before concluding.
Weak Airflow From the Vents
Air that barely moves can come from a clogged filter or a matted coil, a failing blower motor, duct restrictions, or an outdoor coil blocked by debris or ice. Low airflow also makes other faults worse, so we measure airflow and inspect both coils before blaming the refrigerant circuit.
Auxiliary Heat Running All the Time
If the backup heat strips carry the load for hours, the electric bill climbs fast. The cause can be a heat pump fault that locks out the compressor, a defrost problem, incorrect thermostat staging, or failed auxiliary-heat controls. We test why the system keeps calling for auxiliary heat instead of running the heat pump itself.
Short Cycling or Running Constantly
Frequent starts and stops can come from thermostat placement, control faults, refrigerant problems or airflow restrictions. We log run behavior and pressures to find which.
Unusual Noises
Grinding, screeching, loud buzzing, or banging at startup each point to a different group of suspects: worn fan or blower bearings, a failing contactor, loose panels or mounts, or a compressor under strain. Noise alone does not identify the part, so we locate it under load and test the component before recommending a repair. If the sound is loud grinding or screeching, switch the system off at the thermostat and call us — running it can turn a repairable fault into a compressor failure.
Breaker Keeps Tripping
A heat pump that trips its breaker is reacting to an electrical fault: a shorted or grounded compressor, a failing capacitor or contactor, damaged wiring, or a motor drawing too much current. Do not keep resetting the breaker — repeated trips can damage the equipment and are a fire risk; if it trips a second time, leave it off. We test the electrical side with meters — compressor windings, capacitors, contactors, and wiring — to find the cause before anything is replaced.

How Heat Pump Diagnostics Work
We check refrigerant pressures and charge, reversing-valve operation, the defrost board and sensors, contactors and capacitors, compressor and fan operation, airflow and coil condition, thermostat communication, and electrical readings throughout. The diagnostic is $99 + tax, credited in full toward your approved repair — and the repair price is fixed and approved by you before work starts.

Heat Pump Repair FAQ
How much does heat pump repair cost?
The diagnostic visit is $99 + tax, credited in full if you approve the repair. After testing, you receive one fixed price for labor and parts before any work begins — the total depends on the failed part, so we never quote a final price from a phone description.
My heat pump blows cool air and steam rises from the outdoor unit. Is it broken?
Probably not — that is a normal defrost cycle: the system briefly reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil, and auxiliary heat may not fully cover the gap. If the unit stays iced over, blows cold air for long stretches, or never returns to heating, that is a fault worth a diagnostic visit.
Which brands do you service?
We service all major heat pump brands, including Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Carrier, Trane, Lennox and Bosch. We are an independent service company — parts are covered by the applicable manufacturer or supplier warranty shown on your receipt.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes — a 90-day labor warranty on every repair. Parts are covered by the manufacturer or supplier warranty, as specified on your receipt.
How fast can you come out?
We schedule visits Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Call (917) 997-4525 or request service online, and we will offer the earliest available appointment and confirm your arrival window.
